Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy were celebrating again recently after HOP Boxer – Lloyd “The Animal” Farrington (Cowplain Comprehensive School) beat v Ellis Grant (Transport Boxing Club) who was last year’s champion and a record of 18 won 17 bouts.

Farrington won the England Boxing Schoolboy Title – Class A at 38.5kg. at Grantham Leisure Centre, Grantham.

Round 1

Farrington dominated from the bell. Holding the centre of the ring to dictate the tempo of the round and to attack or defend when needs be.

Round 2

Farrington increased the pressure by using triggers/ feints to draw his opponent into the centre of the ring before unloading with fast and crisp 3 to 5 punch combinations.

Round 3

Realising the bout was close, Farrington ceased his chance with both hands standing toe to toe with his opponent then firing again with another wave of punches, forcing his opponent to retreat,  to ensure he took the points decision of the judges.

Farrington has now been invited for a Team England selection squad training at O’Dell’s Boxing Gym in Birmingham on Saturday 11th June 2016.

The England team coaches will be selecting the boxers to represent England in the European Championships coming up soon.

HOP Head coach “Q” Shillingford “It was a great atmosphere at Grantham Leisure Centre with two rings and 70 bouts of the best boxers in the country.

“Q” applauded Lloyd’s commitment and dedication to training and the way he listened to the corner and carried out the tactics practised in the gym.

Once again “Q” recognised the voluntarily hours put in by all the coaches in the HOP gym to ensure all the boxers get the best chance of achieving their goals in the sport they dedicate themselves too.

Farrington, has been professional in his training and his diet, holding your weight in a championship that stretches over a month,  can be difficult especially when your body is trying to grow at the same time.

Special thanks to HOP gym Manager Dave Johnston for putting in the extra sessions with all the schoolboy boxers to give them that extra advantage in the ring.

“Q” commented – the club is buzzing at the moment, we have had a long hard season, with lots of youngsters competing all over the country and in different championships.  We have had 4 national champions this year –

Ivy Jane Smith, Taylor Smith, Paris Williams and now Lloyd Farrington. Also Walid Adenas reached the NABC Finals, and semi-final of the England Youth Championships.  We have had a lot of youngsters win Hampshire and Southern Counties Titles.

Next year is going to be very exciting year for Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy.
