HOP travelled to Lymington to compete for this year National Minnows and National Schoolboy Championships. Resulting in 5 of the HOP boxers picking up Hampshire titles.

HOP five Champions

Success came for Robbie Patterson who won his Hampshire Minnows title at his first attempt. Patterson who has come through the GB National Boxing Award programme set up by HOP three years ago. Patterson is a product of the National Award system, he started the National Awards programme when he was only 9yrs, achieving his 6 National Boxing Awards medals and certificates and now he is Hampshire Minnows Champion. Patterson took on Moneyfields boxer Tyler Hall. Both boxers put on a fine display and very entertaining bout but Patterson’s fast hands and slick footwork always kept him ahead by the judges.

It was shock and disappointment happened early for the HOP Team when top boxer Lucas Ballingall had the decision go against him. Ballingall who only last week lost by one point to England No. 1 Scott Rankin from Liverpool, was tipped to win the National Schoolboy Championship this year by ABA Advanced Coach and HOP Boss “Q” Shillingford.

Head Coach of the HOP Junior Boxers Paul Kapnisi said “I am very disappointed in the decision; I thought Lucas had done more than enough, especially in the latter rounds.”

On a positive note Jesse Douglas took on the highly rated Connor Whitaker (Moneyfields), after three hard fought rounds by both boxers, Whitaker (Moneyfields) got the decision of the judges. This was a very even match and both boxers gave their all, HOP are delighted how Jess Douglas has improved over the last 4 months, again he has taken a huge step forward in his ability and boxing career.

Another boxer who is quickly developing is Elias Cole who was put in the National Championships with only his 3rd bout, again Elias did not get the decision but his performance for only his third bout at this level is fantastic, Kapnisi said the boxers are early stages in their boxing career and doing so well, they have a great future in amateur boxing and are definitely on the right track.

Four more of the HOP Boxers moved forward on walkovers in this year’s event, meaning HOP will have 5 Hampshire Champions moving into the next round of the National tournament (Hants v Kent), which will be held at The Highlands Working Mans Club, Highlands Road, Fareham on Saturday 22nd January 2011, early afternoon start.
