Robbie MatthewsRyan ColquhounGreg Bridet with Coaches Q Shillingford and Colin Williams

Three “Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy” (H.O.P) boxers competed in this year ABA Senior Open Championship at the Southern Counties round on Saturday 10th March 2012 in Fulstone Manor School, Brenchley Road, Sittingbourne, Kent. ME10 4EG

Defending Southern Counties Open Lightweight Champion and H.O.P Team Captain Robbie Matthews had to much for the brave Shane Govan (Leigh Park ABC). The seasoned Matthews put in a sharp performance throwing punches at all angles, to run out a clear unanimous decision winner from all the judges.

Portsmouth’s University Student and Harringey Cup Gold Medalist H.O.P light heavyweight Ryan Colquhoun had it all to do as he faced the rated and last year’s ABA Semi Finalist Chevron Clarke (Gravesham ABC) Clarke who is a very highly rated boxer beat Colquhoun on a 3-2 majority decision after a very even and entertaining bout. H.O.P Head Coach of the Senior boxers Colin Williams was full of praise for Colquhoun performance and said “the decision could easily of gone our way, we are very proud of Ryan’s performance. Ryan did what was asked of him”.

Portsmouth City U20’s ABA National Champion 2011 and the News Sportsman of the year runner up 2011, Greg Bridet is still on track for his second national title within a year. Bridet took less than 2 mins before his opponent Simon Haddon (Willingdon ABC) was dropped with a short rear hand uppercut, Haddon made the count but there was to be no reprieve as the explosive Bridet unleashed a blistering attack with a barrage of combinations, which saw his opponent helpless on the ropes and the referee waving the bout over and Bridet crowned, Southern Counties ABA Open Class Heavyweight Champion 2012.

H.O.P Boss “Q” Shillingford said, naturally we are disappointed with the decision with Ryan, but that’s sport, what was good to see was Ryan Colquhoun, box to instructions, and put in a national level performance, even the opponents coach said “that was to close for comfort”, Ryan can be very pleased on how he represented the club and the city in this years open championship. Both Matthews and Bridet boxed very well and put in top performances. Southern Counties now face London ABA on Saturday 17th September 2012, at the Senior ABA Pre Quarter Finals:
