Mateusz ZiolkowskiMateusz Ziolkowski winning CYP ChampionCharter Academy, in Portsmouth were celebrating this week, when they found out that all 17 of there students had passed there Boxing Educational qualification.

The 17 students who opted to do boxing as part of there PE educational curriculum ASDAN CoPE using boxing as a curriculum vehicle for achievement.

The Charter Academy in Portsmouth has been running the Boxing Educational programme for three years The Charter Academy is also the base for the very successful “Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy” (H.O.P).

Dame Sharon Hollows with ABA Chairman Keith WaltersDame Sharon Hollows (Principal of Charter Academy) said “The inclusion of amateur boxing to Charter Academy has been fantastic, the sport has had a very positive impact on all our students, and we have had lots of successful boxing shows in the school sports hall. The sport is very new to a lot of the boys and girls however they are all enjoying learning the art of amateur boxing along with other key skills they pick up on the boxing qualification such as working with others, problem solving, research, discussion, improving own learning and performance all from boxing related activities.

Chairman of the ABA of England Keith Walters is delighted with the development of Boxing in Schools and particularly at Charter Academy in Portsmouth and commented “This is another step forward for the sport of Amateur Boxing and the intention is to roll out the Recreational and Educational programme all over the country. The 6 level GB Boxing Award scheme, provides an excellent entry route into the core skills of Amateur Boxing for recreational boxers or boxers joining boxing clubs and preparing for their first bout”. It also gains a credit per award towards the ASDAN CoPE Boxing Educational Qualification.

National CYP Champion 2011/12 Mateusz Ziolkowski took up boxing at the age of 12, whilst at Charter Academy, he was introduced to the sport via the GB Boxing Awards programme he then opted to add boxing as one of his educational subjects for his PE studies. Mateusz is one of this year’s successful students who passed the boxing educational qualification, making him a champion inside and outside of the ring.
