Heart of Portsmouth Boxing ClubThe Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy (HOP) had another busy weekend with their boxers competing in different parts of the country. HOP held their first boxing show for this season on Saturday 30th October 2010. Clubs from as far as Plymouth, London, Cornwall, Newquay, Oxford and other clubs from Southern Counties attended. The HOP open boxing show had 19 well matched bouts with plenty of action. The show also had a highlight as the newly crowned Super Middleweight Southern Area King Paul Morbey stepped into the ring as a guest of honor. Bouts included two HOP skill bouts (Joe Hunt and Callum Rodden) and 4 ABA Novice Senior Championship bouts which HOP agreed to host on behalf of Southern Counties. Numbers swelled as the boxing commenced at 1pm on Saturday afternoon at the newly named Charter Community Sports Centre.

Heart of Portsmouth Boxing ClubFirst HOP boxer on was Duane Foster who had to give away experience as he took on Michael Price, from Pinewood Star. After three very hard fought rounds Price got the decision by only two points. The ever improving HOP’s Henry Eley had a very good bout against local boxer Aaron Veal (City of Portsmouth ABC) after a very well matched contest Eley got a unanimous decision of the judges.

Heart of Portsmouth Boxing ClubHOP and Former ABA Female Champion had to work hard to win against tough Olivia Orchard (Newquay ABC) both boxers fought very well; Pond got the majority decision of the judges. HOP’s Jesse Douglas gave away height, reach and experience to beat Pinewood Star boxer Paul Meyeroff, the bout was always in the balance but a last round sustained attack by Douglas got him a split decision in his favor. This was a great win for Douglas who is on a three bout winning streak and improving every bout.

Billie Madden took on Adelaide Baker again HOP had to give away experience and weight to get a bout for Billie and after three tough rounds with both boxers demonstrating excellent boxing skills, Madden lost by only 2 points. Again this was a big stepping stone for Madden who is improving all the time. Mateusz Ziolkowski boxing debut only lasted 1min 10 sec of the first round as he blasted out Jamie Thomas from (St Ives ABC), Ziolkowski came out behind the jab and the first rear hand dropped his opponent to the canvas, a combination of straight and bent arm punches soon had the referee waving the bout over as his opponent hit the canvas for the second time.

Heart of Portsmouth Boxing ClubThe ever reliable Sam Ellwood had to come back from the brink of defeat to win his bout with both boxers landing heavy and accurate blows, Ellwood’s fitness prevailed as his opponent began to lose form, allowing Ellwood to pick up the points to win the last round. Another HOP boxing debut was had by HOP, Edward Murison, Ed used his southpaw jab to outmaneuver his tall and rangy opponent and clock up his first win and another win for HOP.

HOP Senior boxer Connor Whitting proved too cagey for Ben Jemison (Hants IOW), by outpointing him on the back foot and then pressing home his advantage with salvo jabs. Another HOP Senior Boxer Robbie Mathews put in a dazzling performance, boxing 3×3 min rounds against Howard Hart (Mayflower ABC). Matthews took his time and cut down the ring as he attacked the long rangy opponent by switching to head and body to win a unanimous decision of the judges.
