National JABA semi-finals at Merlins resort, Leysdown.
Winners of Southern, Home and Western Counties vs Winners of London and Eastern Counties.
Heart of Portsmouth’s Jack Fenton (Class A, 52-54kg) against Eastern Counties Robert Sumner (Sudbury ABC). Sumner tried to use his strength to back Fenton to the ropes from the off. However, Fenton’s improved balance and footwork was on show, to step off Sumners line of attack, and counter with his own shots, taking the first round.
Sumner tried to use unorthodox tactics to unsettle Fenton in the second round, by using rough house tactics and drawing Fenton into a brawl.
With all to play for in the final round Fenton showed a big heart to keep throwing combinations to the end and picking up a hard earned split decision by the judges. Fenton is now competing in his first National Final this weekend.
Walid Adenas (Class B, 63-66kg) being HOP’s second representative, came up against a very tricky opponent in Fred Secular (Bromley and Downham ABC).
Secular showed his experience in the first round, however Adenas in only his first season for HOP, poured on the pressure, after three well fought rounds, Adenas was at the wrong end of a split decision, which could of gone either way.
Coach Paul Kapnisi said: ‘What a huge effort displayed by both boxers. A great achievement reaching the National Final for Jack Fenton, and Adenas will certainly be back fitter and stronger next year.
HOP Head Coach Q Shillingford MBE, said I remember both boxers joining HOP through the school holiday camps.
These young men, train very hard and are great examples and what can be achieved through dedication and commitment.
