Portsmouth City Summer Boxing Camp 2010

The Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy at St Luke’s Sports Center is the venue for any young people wishing to complete the GB National Boxing Awards; the programme has been organized in by the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy Coaches/Tutors and Community Initiative Programme (CIP).

On Friday 30th July 2010, thirty young people passed their relevant ABA national Award. All 30 youngsters will now move forward to either the standard or bronze award. The programme has been set up and ran by ABA of England Advanced Coach and Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy Coaches “Q” Shillingford and Paul Kapnisi and Young Boxing Tutors.

The Summer Boxing Camp is a programme where young people from the age of 5-16yrs, can learn the basics of Amateur Boxing in a fun and recreational environment. The ABA of England National Boxing Awards is run in 6 parts, preliminary, standard, bronze, silver, gold and Platinum.

The GB National Boxing Awards, Booklets, Medals and Certificates were presented by Portsmouth MP Penny Mordaunt. “This is fantastic for the cities young people remarked MP Penny Mordaunt, today I have seen lots of young people of all ages having lots of fun and demonstrating their boxing skills they have learnt already early into the summer break. The set up and boxing programme is fantastic at HOP and I am even more impressed with the young Boxing Tutors teaching the awards under the supervision of the Academy Coaches. To see 14/16 yr olds teaching the national boxing awards programme on their summer break to their piers and acting as good role models is very beneficial to the city and most of all to them as individuals. Penny Mordaunt added “keeping the young people engaged in sport whilst on school break is just what they need, and the city is fully behind the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy and its efforts to promote Amateur Boxing in this fun and recreational way.

Heart of Portsmouth Academy Coach Paul Kapnisi said “We have had a really enjoyable week and are now ready to progress the young people to the next stage”. They are all doing really well, and lots of them have expressed interest in keeping up their boxing training after the school holidays, which again is good for the academy. Kapnisi added that any parent/guardian wishing further information regarding the Summer Boxing Camp or to enroll their youngsters in the programme can turn up on the day however to stop any disappointment can book on the following details: Liz Scotney – p.j.scotney@btinternet.com or ring 07904 596687.

The Summer School Break is a good time to get the young people into sport and activities whilst on their school holidays, last year many of the youngsters took up the sport and joined the Boxing Academy full time, explained hop Boss “Q” Shillingford, HOP Coaches will also be teaching the National Boxing Awards programme every Wednesday at 3pm – 5pm at the Cosham Community Hall starting from Wed 4th August 2010.
