Southern Counties Female Regional Squad - Step towards National Championships 2010.

Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy at St Luke’s Sports Center, was the venue for the Southern Counties Regional Female Squad on Sunday 14th February 2010. In the absence of the Southern Counties Regional Coach Matt Bell (who was on England duties) the session was headed up by ABA Advanced Coach Q Shillingford (HOP).

18 Female boxers attended the session that ran from 10:00 till 2pm. After a good warm up, and partner work, the boxers used both rings for lots of sparring, each female boxer got at least 5 – 8 rounds of sparring.

Also in attendance was London Female Coach Jamie Johnson who came down to support the female boxers, she said: This is fantastic for female boxing in the south, and the females are so dedicated, I have seen some excellent potential, the venue and facilities are exceptional for regional and national squad training.

Q added: Yet again another boxing development move for the sport in the City and the region, HOP has 9 carded active female boxers and a team of 23 female boxers; I was delighted to see the improvement gained by Stacey ABC female boxer Charlie Southam. ABA Coach Paul Southam (Stacey ABC) and the Stacey boxing coaches have worked very well in her boxing technique and ability.

I also invited down ABA England Champion Rebecca Donnelly (Gravesham ABC), Rebecca did her own sparring, then spent time with all the female boxers, moving around with them, encouraging and coaching whilst sparring, she was a great role model for the session and all the females appreciated her advice and tips that she put across with regards to female boxing in England. Rebecca as a coach and an England boxer is a great ambassador for the sport.

Southern Counties Regional Secretary and ABA Full Badge Coach Liz Addington said: “Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy/Southern Counties are hosting the National female Boxing Championships in the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth in May and early June; these sessions are important for our female boxer’s development in the South in preparation for the Championships”.
